I was living in Kihei, Maui, in the early 2000s when there was a dock worker's strike in Los Angeles. There were no deliveries during that time. The two shortages that hurt most were green tea and rice. I think I got the last bag of rice on Maui. It was at the old O'oka Market in Wailuku. It was all the way at the back of the bottom shelf. I treated that rice like gold, until the ships started running again.

The other funny shortage was mouse traps. There was a coincidental infestation of mice on Maui at that same time. The merchants had 20,000 traps on order, but none would be delivered until the strike ended. People from the mainland don't understand stuff like that until they have lived on an island.
