It is so strange how as kids, we are frustrated that adults don’t take us seriously, but as adults, most people ignore kids. There’s a dissonance there.
A few years ago, I used to frequent a family run restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA. The owner’s young grandson was in the store one day and was trying to tell people about his toy, a superhero action figure. Everyone ignored him. I knelt down and listened to him.
His grandmother saw that and asked, “Are you actually talking to him,” in a tone that indicated she didn’t think the child had anything worth hearing.
I replied to her one of my rules for living, “I will never be too busy to talk to a child.” More people should listen to kids. They see more and are more perceptive than adults give them credit for.
