It is Good to be Writing Again
I am at the end of my first month as an active contributor to the Medium community. I made a Medium account just prior to the pandemic lockdown, in February 2020. At the time, I had no designs on creating content. I was in the midst of an interstate relocation from Seattle, WA to San Diego, CA, and was really just curious to see what others had written. The written word is like a drug to me. There was, and is, an abundance of high quality content here to keep my attention. I was not shy about commenting on others’ work, but I really did not feel I had anything to contribute.
The first thing I wrote on Medium was a comment on 10 March 2020, on an article by Marissa on the topic of urban blight in Seattle. I made a few more comments on articles of various topics over the next few months. I was kind of distracted a lot of that time, however. We had planned our relocation before the pandemic lockdown, and ended up spending months, and most of our savings, in hotels, while trying to find jobs and an apartment, and hoping like crazy that something would materialize for us. Spoiler warning: Everything worked out fine. We found jobs and an apartment. It was dicey for a while there though. I found myself pricing out camping equipment at one point.
Somewhere during all this, I let my Medium membership lapse. Money was getting tight, and subscriptions were among the first things to get cut. With most of the good stuff on Medium behind the paywall, I kind of drifted away, and contributed absolutely nothing from 23 April 2020 to 30 August 2021.
My first crafted piece posted on 30 August 2021, and I have set myself a schedule of posting every Monday and Thursday. I have had an interest in writing most of my life, and am so grateful to the people who make the Medium service available, and to the users, who breathe life into this platform. There are other social media platforms out there, but the toxicity level is off the charts. The people on Medium are uniquely insightful and supportive, and have made this experience highly rewarding.
